Institutions of higher education in Connecticut and Baden-Württemberg have been cooperating successfully for more than three decades, with a strong focus on student exchange. To foster academic cooperation, a faculty mobility component was introduced in 2019 as part of this longstanding cooperation.

For the calendar year 2026, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and Arts is offering travel grants for short visits by researchers to help initiate new collaborations and strengthen existing partnerships.

Researchers from Baden-Württemberg’s nine research universities and its six Universities of Education, as well as the universities and colleges in Connecticut participating in the state program who are interested in closer collaboration and want to actively participate in the state program are encouraged to apply for these travel grants.

It is particularly desirable that the visits also include undergraduate and/or graduate students (e.g. guest lecture, workshop, etc.) or other outreach activities.

Amount of Awards and Funding Period:

Grants are offered for short-term (3 – 10 days) visits to Baden-Württemberg, to assist with travel and living costs.

  • Travel allowance: 1,200 EUR,
  • Funding per diem: 150 EUR (arrival/departure day will be counted as half days each).

The visit must take place in the calendar year 2026

Eligibility:

Applicants must hold an appropriate appointment at their home institution, which officially participates in the Connecticut – Baden-Württemberg Exchange. Participation in the mobility program implies a deliberate and active commitment to the project of building durable bridges, at the departmental level, between the partner institutions in Connecticut and Baden-Württemberg.

Application Information:

The application consists of:

  • Application form (including CV and list of publications)
  • Description of purpose of visit, including reason for choice of host researcher/host institution and potential for developing additional contact and cooperation between the units represented by the applicant and the proposed host.
  • Invitation letter from host

The complete application shall be sent to Elisabeth Trnka-Hammel, Coordinator, Connecticut– Baden-Württemberg Program, Heidelberg University, email: Elisabeth.Trnka@zuv.uni-heidelberg.de.
